2017 Narcisse Pinot Noir
As followers of the Soliste philosophy are aware, in 2009 we made the decision to return to the roots of Burgundy and the craftsmanship of the Cistercian monks of Vougeot to focus on single clones from single vineyards and matured in single cooperage: MonoClone® our amazing L’Espérance, Sonatera, L’Ambroisie, Nouveau Monde and Forêt.
From this disciplined approach, we realized we had a unique and rare opportunity to create a Single Cuvee from the other great barrels from each of our vineyards. We blended the best barrels together and aged to harmonize the once separated wines to craft Narcisse Pinot Noir -- an exceptional wine of great depth, fruit concentration, and elegance, a pure representation of Soliste wines.
2017 began with record rainfalls ending drought pressure. The mild spring was ideal for an uneventful bud break. We avoided late summer heat spikes in our cold-climate vineyards. We were also fortunate to have our wines harvested and safely in barrel before the devasting fires. The grapes were handpicked at midnight with rigorous field selection and winery hand sorting. The grapes were gently destemmed and 15% whole cluster was reserved for spice, tannin, and structure. Following a brief cold soak and gentle ferment, we aged Narcisse in 100% French Oak barrels (31% new) for 16 months.
Narcisse has intense luminosity of deep ruby, crushed cassis robe, and vibrant density, denoting a wine of great texture. On the nose, there is intense bouquet of Sous Bois (autumnal forest floor), dusty rose petals, raspberry Kirsch coulis, bergamot, and Montmorency cherry compote accented with Porcini dust. The front palate is superbly dense yet sophisticated; Full body, rich, bold, and powerful with a mouthful of chewy raspberry, red cherry compote, and cassis spiked with vanilla fat. As the wine evolves in the glass or decanter, the mid-palate becomes suave and polished, with refined compact layers of dark fruit, wild cherries, chocolate, black truffles, and graphite. This is a wine of great depth, complexity, and superb mid-palate concentration balance with a multi-dimensional core framed by a silky texture. Narcisse is a spicy mouthful of cherry and pepper, plum compote, violets, licorice, espresso roast, and earthy truffles. The abundant dry extract also buffers the unyielding tannic backbone and are well-integrated – a result of the extra barrel aging to enhance the spice and herbal undertones, which creates a sense of weight, exotism, and fattiness. The massively long finish is as close to perfection, very Le Musigny like, rich, firm, sappy, complex, polished…the Pinot Noir Paradox…Soliste.
